The Turkmenistan Youth and Civic Values Foundation’s new programs have been launched recently and are showing great progress.

TOEFL Scholarship Program

As of the Board of Director’s October 2006 meeting, three Turkmen students were selected to receive support in their work towards obtaining higher education. These students, whose essays relayed dreams of studying in top-notch institutions to become engineers, scientists or work in international development, will soon receive preparation materials for the TOEFL exam. They have been registered for the January exam, made possible through grants made by the Turkmenistan Youth and Civic Values Foundation and supported by people like you.

These students face daunting challenges in seeking out and applying for institutions of higher learning outside of Turkmenistan. The first hurdle the Foundation helps them overcome is the $140 TOEFL test application fee. The TOEFL test is a necessary prerequisite for their college applications, but $140 is outside the means of most Turkmen families. By providing this fee and offering preparation materials, the Foundation gives these ambitious, bright students a boost in starting their educational careers.

Civic Values Program

In July of this year, The Foundation inaugurated its first project by sending Bahar Ashyrbayeva, a young Turkmen woman from the capital city of Ashgabat, to Yerevan, Armenia to learn about the theory and practice of democracy in primarily non-Western nations.

The International Youth Conference on National Democracies was organized to “discuss the possible issues of transitional democracies and to argue on the sharper aspects and find possible solutions.”

Bahar spent over a week focused on the responsibilities of youth in democracies, saying that “they organized the time and schedule in a way that allowed you to take some time to talk to the Parliament representative or European Council Representative in person, which was [a] fascinating experience for me.”

The Foundation’s website will soon have Bahar’s full report on her experiences at the conference.
